Health and development have historically privileged particular institutions and forms of expertise, leaving valuable knowledge invisible when it sits outside them.
S4H recognises scientific, professional and technical expertise while deliberately creating room for implementation knowledge, community insight, indigenous and traditional knowledge and lived experience where relevant. For us, decoloniality is not the rejection of science or professional expertise — it is the rejection of the assumption that these are the only legitimate sources of knowledge.
What knowledge does this problem require, and who holds it?
This does not mean every knowledge claim carries equal weight for every purpose. Different questions require different forms of expertise, and professional scope, licences and registration remain respected where required.

Context Before Prescription
Understand before recommending. We do not assume a solution developed elsewhere can simply be copied here.

Start with the problem, then identify whose knowledge it requires — not automatically the most senior title in the room.

Evidence Is Plural, Not Arbitrary
Different forms of knowledge require appropriate standards of credibility. Plurality does not mean anything goes.

Dr Bulela Vava founded Solve 4 Health from a lived understanding of the gap between health policy intent and community health reality in South Africa, drawn from over a decade of work across rural and urban clinical settings, national civil society leadership and academia. A dental public health specialist and systems thinker, he is a Global Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in South Africa and Founder & Executive Director of the Public Oral Health Forum (POHF), leading national advocacy on health equity, workforce development, NCD prevention, environmentally responsible dentistry and oral health integration. His commitment to population health earned him a place among the Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans in 2025.
